Animal Nutrition and Research Specialist - POSITION FILLED

We are currently recruiting an Animal Nutrition and Research Specialist for our Alberta based client. The Animal Nutrition and Research Specialist works with the Animal Health & Nutrition Manager, and the Product Development and Performance Manager to ensure the goals of the department are met. This position is accountable for the support of efficient and timely launches of new products, the dissemination of research results and findings to all interested stakeholders and development and validation of scientifically proven diets for dogs and cats that are Biologically Appropriate. This position participates in all areas of research and nutritional development of products, including macro and micro-ingredient development, formulation, ingredient applications, and independent and institutionally-lead animal nutrition and performance studies.
The Animal Nutrition and Research Specialist works out of the Company’s Research and Innovation Centre, and reports directly to the Manager, Health & Nutrition with an indirect report to the VP, Research and Innovation.
• Provide accurate analysis of results and effective written & oral presentation summaries of all AAFCO feeding trials and research studies to other department members. • Thorough maintenance of records of all test results, projects, and other intellectual property, including storage in a secure manner. • Active role in development, formulation and implementation of companion animal nutrition research programs • Participate in the research and development of ideas for new product development projects that are in alignment with the Company’s mission and values. • Effective coordination of day-to-day activities and research studies • Consistent participation in technical training of marketing and sales staff in new products and research related to product development. • On-time, accurate shipment of diets and treats to kennels and other outside laboratories. • Accurate & efficient planning and management of resources to meet schedules and coordinate departmental functions in the absence of the Managers. • Demonstration of a high level of understanding of research and nutrition, including attending conferences or seminars related to the research and nutrition within the pet food and companion animal health realm. • Development of departmental standards, practices and procedures that comply with all relevant regulatory requirements (AAFCO, FEDIAF, FDA) and with corporate policies, practices and procedures. • Demonstration of knowledge of the Company’s policies and practices regarding health, safety and the environment, including commitment to personal compliance with same. • Perform other tasks as assigned.
• Minimum Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition or Animal Health, MSc/PhD is considered an asset. • 2-3 years’ experience with initiating and conducting nutritional research. • Animal feed formulation experience considered an asset. • Detail-oriented, with a good ability to review documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance to SOPs and GMP. • Knowledge of current product lines and of quality and performance issues related to products. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Fluent in English, both written and spoken. • Excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to multi-task and set priorities. • Uses discretion and judgment in handling confidential, proprietary or sensitive information. • Able to work effectively independently or within a group. • Passion to learn, develop, and implement new technologies and methods. • Computer proficiency with MS Office programs.
