We are currently recruiting a Product Development Lead for our Alberta based client. The Product Development Lead works with the Manager, Product Development and Performance to ensure the goals of the department are met. This position has accountability for the on-time launches of new products that meet or exceed product performance goals and development and validation of scientifically proven freeze dry treats and diets for dogs and cats that are Biologically Appropriate and cost efficient. This position participates in both the oversight and hands-on work in several areas of product development and special projects including test runs, performance testing, and developing new technologies for creating biologically appropriate products.
The Product Development Lead works out of the Companys Research and Innovation Centre, and reports directly to the Manager, Product Development & Performance with an indirect report to the VP, Innovation & Strategic Development.
In absence of Product Development & Performance Manager, provide updates to corporate project team on status of all PD tasks contributing to larger projects. Oversight & participation in on-time execution hand off of new formulas, ingredients, and packaging from corporate product development. Oversight and participation in several areas of product development for new products and special projects including test runs, performance testing, staff training, and developing new technologies. Work closely with the Food Scientist in the Research and Innovation Centre to develop new technologies with the goal of viability for future production development projects, report progress to the Product Development team. Represent R&I at any on-site test runs for new formulas, provide oversight for coordination of relevant testing and performance studies, adhering to the R&I project plan. Provide on-site support for kitchens in manufacturing of new products and train operations and QA staff on new products and procedures related to product development. Effective oversight and coordination of day-to-day activities of studies aimed at process improvements or performance. Lead technical product development activities made products and special projects looking at new technologies. Effective development & demonstration of strong understanding of extrusion and freeze dry techniques and the function of production equipment/machinery within the company. Accurate & efficient planning and management of resources to meet schedules and coordinate departmental functions in the absence of the Managers. Demonstration of a high level of understanding of the pet food industry, including attending forums or seminars related to the development of new trends or technologies within the pet food realm. Development of departmental standards, practices and procedures that comply with all relevant regulatory requirements and with corporate policies, practices and procedures. Consistent participation in technical training of production and quality assurance staff in new and revised protocols related to product development and improvement in products and processes. Participate in the development of ideas for new product development projects that are in alignment of the Companys mission, vision, and values. Demonstration of knowledge of the Companys policies and practices regarding health, safety and the environment, including commitment to personal compliance with same. Perform other tasks as assigned.
Minimum of Bachelor of Science Degree in related field (Food Science, Animal Science, Biology, etc.), Masters is considered an asset. 5+ years of previous experience in a food manufacturing or product development setting, meat handling and processing experience is an asset. 2+ years of supervisory experience, delegating tasks to staff in order to meet project timelines. Knowledge of retort packaging and/or canning processes in a food industry, hands-on experience preferred. Knowledge of current product. Experience in interacting with other individuals in the food and/or pet food industries, demonstrating diplomacy and professionalism at all times. Detail-oriented, with a good ability to review documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance to SOPs and GMP. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Fluent in English, both written and spoken. Excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to multi-task and set priorities. Uses discretion and judgment in handling confidential, proprietary or sensitive information. Able to work effectively independently or within a group. Passion to learn, develop, and implement new technologies and methods. Computer proficiency with MS Office programs.
