Director of Research & Development - POSITION FILLED
Our award-winning food manufacturing industry client is currently recruiting a Director of Research & Development. This position requires an energetic and experienced individual with a bias for action to support the explosive growth of the Company. Reporting to the CEO, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership and execution of all Research and Development activities.
Key Responsibilities: Responsible for leading new product development, and existing product improvements in compliance with federal, provincial, nutritional and labeling laws and guidelines. Directs and implements the companys research and development policies, objectives and initiatives. Works closely with Marketing in developing products. Develops new products using market trend data. Researches and develops new products, including improvements based on technical expertise, laboratory results and consumer research. Exploratory research for potential new product and processes. Conducts sensory product evaluations, quality audits and produce samples as required. Finds ways to lower costs by re-engineering current company products without compromising taste or quality. Conducts product analysis and research to ensure company is up to date on all aspects of product trends. Works with Operations to develop new processes / procedures and ensure that product development efforts are compatible and beneficial to the manufacturing capabilities. Sources new co-packer supplier vendors and works with existing vendors to improve product and process. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all company team members, R&D consultants, co-packers, material suppliers and government grant partners. Monitors production, raw materials and finished product during R&D process. Organizes analytical tests on product or ingredients as required. Maintains an organized, legible and accurate documentation for all R&D programs. Stays current with all food and labeling regulations in Canada and the USA. Stays current with food related consumer trends, Certifications (Organic, Kosher, Non GMO, GFSI, etc) Allergens and Sensitive Ingredients, and other related topics through Continuing Education such as workshops, seminars, and publications. Ensures that all aspects of R&D operation meet all GMPs, personal safety and BRC-GFSI Food Safety Standards.
Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of R&D, engineering and manufacturing. Experience with intellectual property, product design and new product launches. Experience with various food process methods (cold slab, extrusion, UHT, milling, blending,etc). Demonstrated technical expertise in research and development. Ability to work well within a team and independently. Exhibits well developed intercommunication and interpersonal skills. Innovative and analytical problem solving skills. Teamwork and detail orientation. Organization skills to effectively meet deadlines. Initiative and bias for action. 10 or more years of technical and product development / innovation experience. Degree in Engineering, Sciences or in Food Science. 5 plus years experience in managing product development
